This is why I’m an Atheist

My lack of religion is in part due to being raised without one. Both my parents were raised Catholic but my Mom, lacking in belief told my Dad that if he wanted to raise my siblings and I Catholic, she would take us to religion class but he would have to take us to church. My Dad said he couldn’t because he worked Sundays. Therefore we were raised Atheist.

I looked into religion, namely Christianity and Catholicism, but frankly, none of it made any sense to me. I like to believe that I made an educated decision to be an Atheist, and here is why:

Adam and Eve/Noah and the Ark

I believe in evolution. Frankly, I believe that anybody who does not believe in evolution does not understand the true meaning of the word. Just look at it here http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/evolution. In my opinion believing in evolution and believing that the human race is due to evolution, are two different things. When it comes to how the human race began, evolution, in that humans evolved from Ape like creatures, makes more sense to me than Adam and Eve.

So God, who apparently is allowed to just be, created Adam, then from his rib created Eve. Then they had sex and got kicked out of Eden. NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE!!! Why would God create not one but TWO people with the parts and desire to have sex and reproduce if he did not want them to have sex and reproduce? Why would he create a male and female? Why not just sexless human beings? You can argue the point that God did not give them the desire to have sex; you cannot argue the fact that he made them with the parts to have sex and reproduce.

The next part of this story goes that Adam and Eve had two sons, one of which killed the other. So the one that lived had sex with his mother? Oh wait they had another son named Seth, and “other sons and daughters”. Sons and daughters who I believe did not enter the picture till somebody thought better of the original story. So Adam and Eve’s children clearly had sex with each other and populated this Earth and from two of their children (or one of their children and them) came Noah.

Now Noah built an ark and the only humans he took with him were his wife, his sons, and their wives. Now once the flood was over clearly this family re-populated the Earth.

With these theories, we came from not one but TWO round of incest. Something that today is morally wrong. Now why is that an act that was once allowed, that helped create the people of this earth is now a big no-no?

Now to go back to Adam and Eve, did anybody ever think they were Ape like creatures, or is it just me?

Religion as the explanation

I don’t need religion to explain to me why things happen. I know that there once was a time it was needed, but that is no more. Science has explained things like why it rains. As for what is still unexplained, I believe in time science will explain it. Maybe that scientist is just still learning his or hers ABCs.

God as somebody to talk to and look out for us

I don’t believe in God. I don’t believe he is there watching out for us and I don’t need him to be. I do believe if I lived in a time when I was crossing the ocean in a ship or across the country in a covered wagon into the great unknown that I would have felt comfort in somebody above looking out for me. In today’s world I just don’t feel that need for it.

Being good

My mom told me a story that a friend of my when I was younger asked me how I knew the difference between right and wrong and that my answer was “My mom tells me”. It made my mom laugh. It makes me laugh too. My mom, as well as other members of my family, and society tells me what is right, and what is wrong. I did not need religion to tell me it is wrong to kill somebody or steal. I know because of society. I like to believe that I am a good person.

The greatest PSA to be an Atheist I have EVER heard.

Somebody my mom used to work with made a comment that gives me a great reason to be an Atheist. In some discussion of how good my brother, sister and I are, she made a comment that it was because the devil leaves us alone.

According to her, because we don’t believe in God, the devil has no reason to tempt us into being bad. So religious people struggle only because the devil feels the need to tempt them? If they stop believing then will the devil stop tempting them and they will be good? Then why believe in God?

I do believe that about sums it up. If I can remember anything else I will add it in a future post.
